Loan Repayment Chart: Monthly Payments for £1,000 to £50,000 over 1 to 10 Years
Monthly payment for any loan from £1,000 to £50,000 over 1 to 10 years at 4%, 7% and 10%. A £10,000 loan at 7% over 5 years costs £198.01 a month.

A loan repayment chart saves you running the formula every time. This one covers 12 loan amounts from £1,000 to £50,000, 10 terms from 1 to 10 years and three example interest rates: 4%, 7% and 10%. Each number is the monthly payment on a fixed-rate loan repaid in equal monthly instalments.
Below the chart you will find the interest cost, a payment-per-£1,000 table that lets you price any other amount, and links that open the loan repayment calculator already filled in. It is a supporting guide to how loan repayments work. Every figure comes from the same formula as the calculator.

How to read the loan repayment chart#
Pick the row for your loan amount and the column for how long you want to take to repay it. The cell is the monthly payment. Use the table for the rate closest to the one you were offered, then check the exact figure in the calculator.
Monthly payment on a fixed-rate loan
Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n)
P = amount borrowed, r = annual rate ÷ 12 (as a decimal), n = number of monthly payments
Worked example: £10,000 at 7% over 5 years
Assumptions: Fixed rate of 7% a year, 60 equal monthly payments, no fees.
- Look up £10,000 in the 7% chart and move to the 5 years column: £198.01 a month.
- Total repaid: 60 × £198.01 ≈ £11,880.72, so the interest is £1,880.72.
The same loan over 10 years drops to £116.11 a month, but the interest rises to £3,933.02.
You can open this example straight away: work out £10,000 at 7% over 5 years fills in the calculator and shows the result, including the interest and a balance chart.

The largest interest bill in the three charts is £50,000 at 10% over 10 years: £660.75 a month and £29,290.44 of interest. At the other end, £1,000 at 4% over a single year costs £85.15 a month and £21.80 in interest.
Any other amount: payment per £1,000#
A loan payment is proportional to the amount borrowed when the rate and term stay the same. So you can price an amount that is not in the chart by multiplying the payment for £1,000 by the number of thousands.
| Rate | 1 year | 2 years | 3 years | 5 years | 7 years | 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4% | £85.15 | £43.42 | £29.52 | £18.42 | £13.67 | £10.12 |
| 7% | £86.53 | £44.77 | £30.88 | £19.80 | £15.09 | £11.61 |
| 10% | £87.92 | £46.14 | £32.27 | £21.25 | £16.60 | £13.22 |
Worked example: £37,500 at 7% over 5 years
Assumptions: Rate and term as in the table; £37,500 is 37.5 thousands.
- Payment per £1,000 at 7% over 5 years: £19.80 (rounded).
- 37.5 × £19.80 = £742.50.
- The exact payment from the formula is £742.54, so rounding the per-£1,000 figure is out by only pennies.

How much interest does each loan cost?#
The payments above hide the cost of the loan. This table shows the total interest at 7% for four terms. Doubling the term more than doubles the interest, because the balance stays higher for longer.

Using the chart to choose a loan#
Before you choose an amount and a term
- Decide the largest monthly payment you can afford with room to spare, then find the shortest term at or below it.
- Compare the interest for two terms, not only the payment.
- Check the rate you were offered against the three charts and run the exact figure in the calculator.
- Ask whether you can overpay or settle early, and what it costs.
- Allow for fees that are not in the chart.
Mistake: Choosing the term with the lowest payment.
Instead: At 7%, £10,000 over 10 years costs £116.11 a month, but £2,052.30 more in interest than over 5 years (£198.01 a month).
Mistake: Using a chart for a different rate without checking.
Instead: The same £10,000 over 5 years is £184.17 at 4%, £198.01 at 7% and £212.47 at 10%. Run your own rate in the calculator.
Mistake: Assuming the amount you can borrow equals the amount you can afford to repay.
Instead: Work back from the monthly payment you can manage, using the chart.

At 7% over 5 years it is £198.01 a month. At 4% it is £184.17, at 10% it is £212.47, and over 10 years at 7% it is £116.11.
Find your loan amount in the left column, then read across to your term. The number is the monthly payment at the rate in the chart's title. If your amount is not listed, multiply the payment for £1,000 by the number of thousands.
It depends on the rate and term. At 7% the interest on £50,000 is £5,578.77 over 3 years, £9,403.60 over 5 years and £19,665.09 over 10 years. The interest table above shows every amount.
Interest is charged on the balance you still owe. A longer term keeps the balance higher for longer, so more months of interest are added even though each payment is smaller.
No. It covers principal and interest only, on a fixed-rate loan with equal monthly payments. Add arrangement fees, insurance and early-repayment charges from your own agreement.
Yes. Add the values to the address: for example the loan repayment calculator page followed by ?amount=10000&rate=7&term=5 opens with those numbers entered and the result showing.
