How to convert images

Transparent backgrounds
PNG, WebP and AVIF can store transparency, while JPG cannot. When you convert a transparent image to JPG, the transparent areas are filled with a background colour, white by default, and you can pick another to match your page or document.
Why AVIF may be missing
The tool can only create a format that your browser can encode. AVIF and WebP are checked on your device, and an option only appears when it works. Current versions of Chrome and Edge can create AVIF; if you do not see it, choose WebP instead.
Which format for which job
- Sending a photo to someone or uploading it to a form: JPG, because everything opens it.
- Keeping a logo, icon or screenshot crisp, or editing it again: PNG.
- Publishing on your own website: WebP, or AVIF where your browser can create it, for the smallest files.
- Anything that needs a see-through background: PNG, WebP or AVIF, never JPG.
If you are unsure, convert a copy to two formats and compare the sizes in the results list before downloading.
The quality slider
The quality value applies to formats that discard detail (JPG, WebP and AVIF), and it starts at 90. Lower values make smaller files but can show blocky edges and blurred text. Values above 90 rarely look different to the eye while making the file noticeably larger. PNG is lossless, so the slider is not needed when PNG is the target.
Converting in bulk
You can add up to 100 files, each up to 60 MB, and convert them together. A progress popup shows the percentage and lets you cancel, and the results appear with the size of each file. Download them singly, or take them all in one ZIP so a whole folder arrives in one go. Output files keep the original name with the new extension.
Quality, conversions and the limits of converting
Converting does not improve an image. Turning a JPG into a PNG keeps every flaw JPG compression already added and usually makes the file larger, and a lossy conversion adds a little more loss. Keep your originals. If you convert and shrink together, the image compressor sets a maximum file size, and the image resizer changes dimensions. Everything is processed in your browser and animated images are saved as a single still frame.
