How to convert JPG to PNG

What changes and what does not
PNG is lossless, so once your picture is in PNG form it can be saved again and again without further quality loss. That is different from JPG, which discards a little more detail every time it is re-saved. The conversion itself, however, cannot bring back detail JPG compression already removed, and blocky artefacts around edges stay exactly as they were.
The PNG file is usually several times bigger than the original JPG, because PNG stores every pixel precisely rather than approximating.
When converting to PNG makes sense
- You will edit the image repeatedly and want to avoid further JPG loss.
- You need a format that supports transparency later, for example to remove a background in an editor.
- The software or upload form you use accepts PNG but not JPG.
- The image is a screenshot, logo or diagram with sharp edges and flat colours.
Converting does not add transparency by itself, since a JPG has none, so the PNG will be fully opaque until you edit it.

When to keep the JPG
